Since Summer hasn't made an appearance yet and it is going to rain tomorrow, School Age will be going to the Old Country Buffet and Rollerskating. Our trip to Jetty Island is canceled.
However, we have planned another Jetty Island trip on August 8th. Let's pray we have summer weather by then. All the kids and teachers too love Jetty Island.

Beginners Parents:

On our calendar it has us going to the Henry Moses Aquatic Center. Unfortunately, we are not going, that is a mistake Janine made when finalizing the calendars. Children's Village is renting a bounce house for the day. We were going to rent a water slide, but if the weather doesn't cooperate, we will just rent a jumpy house.

Don't forget: The Seahawks Rumble Tumble is this Thursday. Parents are welcome to join us for lunch and exciting activities.

Summer Fees & Raffle

The winning raffle number is 6656130. As of today, no one claimed the prize. I will wait until Monday, June 6th and if the prize is not claimed, I will have another drawing. Thankfully, I kept all the raffle tickets. If you have the winning #, please bring your ticket to either Ms. Angelica or Ms. Janine. Please don't give it to your child's teacher.

Ms. Lindy will be out on medical leave from June 3rd-July9th. Angelica will be working Lindy's hours and will be the supervisor on site in the morning. I am back part-time from 2 to 6:30 p.m. If you need to talk with me, please come upstairs to my office.

Summer field trip fees will be billed on June 15th. A correction to the previous posting is that the fee will be due by July 1st, not June 22nd as previously reported. If your child will be attending part-time this summer, we will need to know your schedule as soon as possible. We have many previous clients who wish to return to CVCC for our summer program, but we cannot guarantee space until everyone schedule is turned in.

All the teachers are working hard on their calendars and they might be available by June 13th. I know all the families are anxious to see what we have planned. Our annual picnic is scheduled for Friday, June 24th. Mark your calendars now, we want all our families attending.

Summer Programming

Dear Children Village Families:

We have sent off all our information to the National Accreditation Commission and we finally have time to concentrate on Summer. Calendars will be finalized and ready for family pick-up on June 15th. We will need requested items returned to the center by June 21st. The Summer Program begins on June 22nd. We have added some different themes for 2011 Summer Program at the Village, but also kept some oldies. We will be doing the Drive-In this summer, so start working on those cars now. If you have no idea what I am talking about, please see Lindy or Angelica for instruction. Toddlers are welcome to make a car, but we do not guarantee they will participate in the Drive-In. Infants do not participate in the Drive-In.

Field trip fees will be the same as last year. If your child is on DSHS through the summer, you will need to provide CVCC with the summer field trip fee. DSHS has cut off all its funding for field trips, so in order for your child to participate in our summer full of fun, you will need to pay this fee. To find out how to set up a payment plan or arrangements for your field trip fee, please see Janine.

Young Preschool Room: $50

Older Preschool Room: $100

Beginners: $150

School-Age: $200

All tuition payments must be current before enrolling in our Summer Program. We have a wait list in Beginners and SA for the Summer. If your tuition is not current and/or field trip fees not paid by the 21st of June, your child will not be able to start the Summer Program on June 22nd.

Parent Surveys Due Wed. May 11th by 6:30 p.m.

Anyone who has children or has worked with young children knows that one of their favorite questions is, why: Why is the sky blue? Why is the blanket soft? Why do we have to chew with our mouths closed? Why do you have a headache?

Adults often forget how important this simple question can be. An ideal time to ask ‘why?’ is when a program is pursuing accreditation. Pursuing accreditation is many things: exciting, challenging, tiring, stressful, and validating. We have been pursuing accreditation for over a years, evaluating standards against their current practices and making efforts to create change and improvements to align the two.

Childcare Resources completed their "Mock Visit" and this Friday we will be submitting our request for a validation visit. This can take up to 1 month to 4 months. All the staff at Children's Village have worked hard to build a program that meets National Standard of Early Childhood Learning.

I hope you have seen the changes made and thank you for blessing us each day by allowing us to teach your children.

Christian Broadcasting Network is coming to Children's Village

We have some exciting news!!! On Thursday and Friday, April 28 – 29, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) will be at Vision House and Children’s Village filming a story about the 20-year Vision House ministry. The story will appear on the nationally televised 700 Club the middle of May. Even if we have a photo release for your child, please let us know if you would NOT like your child to appear on a nationally televised program. Thanks!

Children's Village Opens Late Today (1/12/2011)

Since we follow the Renton School Districts inclement weather policy, we will open 90 minutes late at 8 a.m. We will not be serving breakfast so make sure your child has breakfast at home. Many of our staff come from Tacoma, Auburn, Maple Valley, so please be patient with us as everyone gets in safely.

For Staff: If your start time is 8 a.m. or later, you will be coming in at your regular scheduled time.

Let us hope this is the last of the snow we will see until next winter. Drive Safely.

Children's Village Childcare Closed, Wednesday November 24th

Renton School District has made the decision to close tomorrow. Children's Village will not be open. Again, I know this is difficult for working parents, but we want all of the children and staff to be safe. Enjoy the holiday and we will see everyone on Monday, November 29th.

Just a reminder, we have a zoo-phonics parent training on November 30th at 5:30 p.m. Your children can stay in childcare during our training. We will close at regular time.

Renton Closure?

Wow, I don't feel quite so stupid for closing this afternoon. It took me over 3 hours to get home and I live in Maple Valley. Lucky for everyone, we prevented a sleepover tonight at the Village.

Districts around Renton are closed tomorrow including Issaquah and Tahoma (Maple Valley). Renton typically makes a decision at the last minute around 6 a.m. in the morning. Since they are on an early release schedule, they will not be starting late. So either they open tomorrow regular schedule or are closed. If they do open tomorrow, please be patient with teachers coming in late. Many of them live far enough away, that they will not be able to get to work. If Renton does open tomorrow, we will do everything in our power to open on time. To be on the safe side, please do not drop off your children before 7 a.m.

Continue to check schoolreport.org for updated information on the Renton School District's plan tomorrow.

Thank you to all the families for picking up your children early and being so gracious about it. I know all the teachers made it home safe tonight and for that I am grateful.

Inclement Weather Policy

For those parents who are new to Children's Village, we follow the Renton School Districts inclement weather policy. In the past, Renton will open 90 minutes late, in this case CVCC will open at 8 a.m. If the district closes school due to ice and snow, we are also closed. I realize that a closure or late start is difficult for working parents, but we believe that if it is too dangerous for school, then it is too dangerous for staff to drive into work.

Changes to our Calendar

Village Families:

Please check back to the blog daily as we post new information regarding field trip changes and events. We do post the information on the classroom doors, but new information is on the blog before anywhere else. Tomorrow, Wednesday July 7th, SA kids will be going to Coulan due to the very hot weather (finally!) We will be there from noon to 3 and back at the Village by 3:30. Kids need to bring swimsuits, towels and sunscreen, if you have it. An extra pair of clothes to change into once we get back would come in handy. This is a no $ field trip, so do not let your child bring money. It will be taken away by a teacher and returned to you at pick up time. I will be bringing some popsicles or ice cream for the kids. No money is necessary.

It looks like it is finally going to be summer.

Summer Time Fun at the Village

Our summer program will be starting on June 21st with a lot of new activities, some unusual themes and fun field trips planned. The calendars will be out on June 1st. Field trip fees will be charged for all of the classrooms, with the exception of infants and toddlers. The remainder of the children will be receiving a t-shirt for the summer.

Our summer program is very full this year and we have a growing wait list. In order to be enrolled in our summer program, all tuition must be current. If you are behind in your payments, you will need to make payment arrangements with Janine. Otherwise, you will not be able to enroll your child in our Summer Program.

Our staff meeting for June has been changed to June 2nd at 5:30 p.m. Our First Aid/CPR cards are about to expire and we want all our teachers re-certified before our summer program begins.

Our annual anniversary party will take place in our field on June 25th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. We will again be renting a bouncy house and we hope you can make it. Your calendars will let you know what dish to bring as the party will also be a potluck. CVCC will provide hamburgers and hotdogs.

We will again have a required parent training if you decide to volunteer for a field trip. If you have already attended this training, you will not need to attend again. More information on the date will be included with your calendars.

EriAm Sisters

The EriAm Sisters (semi-finalists on America’s Got Talent) and their mom & dad will be coming to Vision House/CV tomorrow at 4:30 to meet some of the kids, sing a song for them, do a craft with them and learn about VH. They will be singing at our NoHomelessKids luncheon on May 13th. We’ll start in the bldg B after school room, and will then go into the beginner’s classroom where they’ll do a craft with the kids. Feel free to join us.

Summer Program

Dear Families of Children's Village Kids,

We have started our summer planning and with the exception of reducing field trips for the Toddlers, we will be doing about the same amount of activities. Dates to keep in mind are June 25th for our 5th annual Children's Village Anniversary Party and July 2nd for the 2nd Annual Josh Wilson Rumble Tumble Football Jumble. We will be doing a potluck and will be providing the hamburgurs and hotdogs to BBQ. We will be keeping it convienent by having the party in the CVCC field.

We held off this year with a rate increase until September 2010, but this will make it vital that we collect enough field trip fees for the trips we take. We will be pricing out each trip, and unfortunetly the cost will go to the parents. In the past we helped offset the cost, but with budgets tight and a lack of increase in tuition, field trip fees will be going up. In fact, the Renton Aquatic Center is now $8.00 per child which is increased from $6.00. Yes, we have planned many trips again to the Aquatic Center for both School Age and Beginners.

Calendars will be out no later then June 1st. They will also be assessible from this blog. More information about the field trip fees will be posted on this blog as they become available.

Children's Village Child Care and Vision House Expand to Shoreline!

On Sunday, April 11, more than 150 people from various churches, community groups and construction companies celebrated a community partnership to bring supportive housing, services and child care to homeless families in north King and south Snohomish Counties.

The ground breaking ceremony honored the 600 donors, volunteers and supporters who are collaborating to build the Vision House Jacob’s Well complex. Located at 23rd Ave NE and Ballinger Way NE in Shoreline, the facility will consist of 20 housing units, a child care center, counseling offices and program space.

While addressing the crowd, Bob Ferguson, King County Council Chair, shared the importance of children having a home, “Children need a stable, safe, loving home to grow up in. This facility will be such a benefit to homeless mothers and their children – providing them all of the things they need to get back on their feet.”

Kurt Campbell, owner of Campbell, Nelson, Nissan and the original visionary for the Jacob’s Well project, stated, “It shocks me that there are more than 11,000 people who are homeless in King and Snohomish Counties. And even more disturbing is that 40% (over 4,500), of the homeless are families with children. There’s never been a greater need for a supportive housing complex in our community than right now.”

Shari Tracey, Shoreline councilmember, said "The number of private and corporate partners that have come together to get this project started is a clear demonstration of how important housing is and how badly these services are needed in our community. This will be an amazing facility, serving the needs of so many homeless kids and their moms. I'm happy that we could be a part of it."

We are having a lot of fun making valentines decorations for our classroom,also every other Thursday we have a music volunteer teacher coming to our classroom to do music and movement and the children love it!!!

During the months of October and November the Beginner Class Students have been working hard learning more about our community, friends, families and how to share Christ's Love with all of His people. Harvest Time is a celebration of the love we have for our family and friends, and thanksgiving for all the Blessings that we have. We enjoyed a feildtrip to Scholz Farms and Gardens where everone picked out a pumpkin to take home, ran across muddy fields, frolicked up and down a giant sawdust mound, braved a gingerbread man maze, and much more!

Giving Trees

You can make Christmas a little brighter for a homeless family this year! Vision House giving trees are a great way to rally your co-workers, family, friends, and church family around a great cause. Sponsoring a giving tree is easy! Here’s how it works:

1. Contact Kristi Slattery at 425.228.6356 or kristis@vision-house.org and let her know you would like to sponsor a tree.

2. Kristi will arrange to have a giving tree delivered to your office or church towards the end of November.

3. People will take tags off the tree that describe a Vision House child or mom and their Christmas wish. They will then buy a gift card or give a financial gift and return it to the box under the tree.

4. Kristi will coordinate pick-up of the trees and gift cards just before Christmas.

5. Gift cards are provided to Vision House families to purchase specific items as needed and are also used throughout the year to support the children and mothers in our care. Trees will be claimed quickly, so call today to reserve yours!

Pumpkin Patch Field Trips

Following is the Pumpkin Patch Schedule for each classroom. If there is a cost for the trip, it will be billed to your monthly statement, unless otherwise noted.

Infants & Toddlers: N/A

YPS: Going to Remlinger Farms in Carnation on Thursday, Oct. 22nd. Leave at 9:00 a.m. and return at 3:30 p.m. Cost will be $10.

OPS: Going to Remlinger Farms in Carnation on Tuesday Oct. 20th. Leave at 9 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. Cost will be $10.

Beginners: Going to Scholz Gardens in Orting on Friday, October 23rd. The Kindergarten children have no school this day. Leaving at 11:30 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. The entry is free, but please bring $2 to $3 and give to Miss Beth, so that each child can purchase a pumpkin.

All this information will be posted on your child's classroom door.

Staff Meetings

Parents:

Our staff meetings have been changed to the 3rd Wednesday of every month. This means on October 21st, November 18th and December 16th, we will be closing at 5:30 p.m. The same late charges will apply, with the exception that on those days are closing time is 5:30 p.m. Please mark your calendars. I will send out reminders on the Tuesday before the meeting and on Wednesday the day of the meeting. I will do this through twitter, signage will be posted on the door and you will have a message when you sign in and out your child.

I am confident that is plenty of reminders, so no excuses if you pick up your child after 5:30 on staff meeting days and are charged a late fee.

As our summer comes to a close The Beginner class has been looking back on some of our favorite field-trips and memories. Parades, camping, exploring God's creatures and learning more about our community and the importance of showing Christ's love to our neighbors...We have had a lot of fun these past couple of months! Our class has had a wonderful new teacher, Ms. Kylie, helping us this summer and we cannot thank her enough for all of the support, love and fun she has given us. Some of our friends will be moving on to new schools, new experiences and new friends, and we will miss all those who will be leaving us shortly! Our new Kindergarteners start September 1st and they are so ready and excited for elementary school! In addition to field-trips the Beginner class has continued working hard all summer learning math skills, addition, writing sentences and so much more, Ms. Beth, Ms. Fidelia and Ms. Kylie couldn't be more proud of all the hard work and success your children have achieved this school year. We will sending home Memory packets Monday, August 31st. Please enjoy all the photos of The Beginner Class Adventures!

Today we had our 2nd annual Hawaiian Luau with guest performance of an authentic Polynesian dance by Melissa Hiu. She also helped mentor four of our children; Axaya, Ronnie, Ronasia and Nuria, and they performed a hula dance for the entire childcare center. A special thank you to Justine and Ursula’s parents, for joining us for the festivities.

Our annual Drive In on the 21st of August has been rescheduled to September 1st, due to the Bargain Bash. Our Bargain Bash will be open for business on Friday and Saturday, August 21st-22nd. Each child will be given a voucher to shop for their favorite item. Parents are encouraged to stop in and check out the merchandise. The sale is located in and around the garages at the bottom of our hill.

Beginner Graduating Class of 2009!

On Monday June 22nd the Beginner Class graduated from Pre-School to Pre-K, Pre-K to Kindergarten and Kindergarten to 1st grade! We had a mini-party: we made cup-cakes, graduation caps and noise makers followed by a parade. We are very proud of our students and the progress they have made over this past year! We have some wonderful memories of our daycare family and the things we have learned from eachother, shared with eachother, and experienced as a class. The kids are looking forward to summer break as we continue learning and preparing for Fall and, of course, having fun on fieldtrips!

Last week the Beginner class took a mini-field trip out to Alki Beach. The weather cooperated and we had a beautiful day of sunshine! The kids had so much fun splashing in the waves and they enjoyed building sand castles and having a picnic on the boardwalk!

No Alarm Fire Alarm

We had an exciting day yesterday. The fire department was called as we had a strange smell in the kitchen! Not to worry. We practice fire alarms regularly and all the children were taken out safely just like we practiced. The smell was coming from a faulty light in our kitchen and electricians will be on site today to fix it. But that is why there are no lights in the kitchen. Dear Parents:

As many of you have learned from news reports, a few probable cases of "Swine" Influenza A (H1N1) have now been reported in our state, including in King County. So far, it appears as if people who become ill with this strain of influenza are recovering. Our current focus at this time is on-going prevention practices for the health and well-being of our kids and staff.

As always, prevention practices are emphasized daily at Children's Village through hand washing with soap and warm water and respiratory etiquette (coughing into sleeve, elbow; coughing, sneezing, or expectorating into paper tissues and immediately discarding them).

Swine flu in people is characterized by fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. The illness may last up to seven days, but people are considered to be contagious as long as symptoms persist. If you or your child have mild flu-like symptoms, monitor your condition and telephone your health care provider to consult if necessary. A diagnosis is confirmed by your health care provider by a positive nasal swab culture.

What You Can Do To Prevent the Spread of Illness:
· Practice healthful habits such as eating nutritious food, getting plenty of sleep, drinking plenty of fluids, being physically active, and reducing stress.
· Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
· Sneeze or cough into a tissue, elbow or sleeve - not your hand! Throw the tissue in the trash after use. Refrain from spitting on the ground.
· Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, contact with other people, or with door handles, keyboards, telephones, and shared writing implements. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective although not used at Children’s Village.

We encourage you to keep your child at home if they begin to experience any flu-like symptoms (cough, sore throat, and fever) and contact your health care provider if they experience a persistent high fever (greater than 101 degrees F) chest pain, difficulty breathing, dehydration, or other worrisome symptoms.

Vision House and Children’s Village staff is closely monitoring the situation. At this time, there is no need to cancel regularly scheduled activities such as classes and other events. We will keep you informed if there are any changes to normal operations.

How serious is swine flu infection? Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. However, swine flu infection can be serious.

How do you catch swine flu? Spread of swine flu can occur in two ways:
Through contact with infected pigs or environments contaminated with swine flu viruses.
Through contact with a person with swine flu. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
You cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products.

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?Antiviral treatment for confirmed or suspected ill cases of swine influenza virus infection may include either oseltamivir or zanamavir. Recommendations for use of antivirals may change as data on antiviral susceptibilities become available.

Children's Village would like to give a big shout out to our new Co-Lead teacher Mr. Rodrick Keels. Our new school age classroom, The Creative Harmony Room, (ages 7-12 years) will be licensed this week and will officially open Monday, April 27th. Mr. Rod will be co-leading with Ms. Fidelia, who will be in the school age room for the summer and school breaks. Mr. Rod has his AA-S and has been working in childcare for the past 2 and a half years.

This April "Late Start Fridays" have been canceled due to the WASL testing. Renton School District will be starting at normal time the next two Fridays, April 17th and 24th. The School Age children and afternoon Kindergarten students will be attending school together at regular time. Please make sure you have your children to the bus stop or at daycare on time, we don't want them missing school =) Thank you!!!

Vision House Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for New After School Program

Vision House dedicated its fourth home for homeless families today, a gift from the Master Builders Care Foundation and Centex Homes who served as the Builder Captain. The winter cold makes homelessness even more unbearable than it already is. Having a warm, secure place to live is the first step for families trying to turn their lives around.

“It’s vital to provide a place where families can stay as they get back on their feet,” said Tracy Cromwell, Master Builders Care Foundation’s President. “Keeping families intact through difficult times is our primary concern.”

The loss of a job or a succession of expenses (medical bills, foreclosure or divorce) can put a family out on the streets.

“Once basic needs have been addressed, a person can get an education or job training so they can obtain a livable wage job and find a permanent place to live,” said Cromwell.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of Master Builders Care Foundation, Centex Homes and the building community,” said Vision House Executive Director, Susan Camerer. “At a time when most would be holding tight to their resources, Centex Homes and the building community have been very generous which allowed us to build at about half the cost. This will help us to direct more dollars to helping homeless families during a time when resources are not meeting the increased need for housing and services."

Centex Homes took the lead on construction management with the support and contributions of their vendor partners. “Centex is proud to give back to the community by providing housing to those in need. The help of our subcontractors has been amazing and we appreciate all that they have contributed to make this building a reality for Vision House.” said Doug Barnes, Division President of Centex Northern Pacific Division.
In addition to the Centex and the homebuilding industry, significant contributors to the project included the Washington Housing Trust Fund.

Kids Helping Kids

With the threat of severe winter storms closing in, nothing could be worse than not having a home; possibly sleeping in your car, piled with blankets, trying to keep warm. But Brownie Troop 2370 members, Maddy and Rebecca are going to change all of that for one homeless child. They prepared a room to welcome a child that will be moving in to a new Vision House apartment scheduled for completion January 15th, 2009. Friends, family and other troop members donated cash, furniture and bedding while the girls provided the elbow grease. “Their hard work has created a beautiful space where a formerly homeless child will feel safe and secure, probably for the first time in a long time,” commented Susan Camerer, Vision House Executive Director. Camerer also stated, “I think they showed incredible leadership, getting so many community members involved in the project.
